How did you get into fishing?

Went jetty fishing with my grandfather back in 1954.

What inspires you about fishing?

The outdoors and the challenge of catching them.

Where in Australia do you fish and what are your main target species?

The northern rivers of Tasmania. Brown and rainbow trout are the species that I chase.

What are 3 of your favourite species and why?

  1. Brown trout

  2. Rainbow trout

  3. Probably snapper and KG whiting if I went saltwater fishing again.

What are a few of your most memorable captures?

  1. My first brown trout that went 3 lbs back in 1966 in South Australia, caught on a Mepps Black Fury.

  2. My first PB brown trout (5lb 4oz) taken in the Mersey River here in Tasmania back in 2006.

  3. My biggest and best wild brown trout ever caught in a river on April 29, 2019, weighing 8lb 8oz.

  4. What are your go-to Tackle Tactics products and some tips for fishing them?

Mepps lures, Boomerang Zinger Duo and Moncross tackle storage boxes.

The large variety of Mepps spinners are great for chasing trout in slow, medium and fast water rivers. Cast them up and across the river and retrieve at the same speed as the flow. They're also the ideal lure for other fish species in rivers, lakes and dams too.

The Zinger Duo is the perfect tool for fishing, something that's fitted to my fishing vest permanently.

What are your go-to Okuma products and why?

I use an Okuma LRF 6' 1-3kg split grip rod, coupled with an Okuma Ceymar C-10 spinning reel. It's a beautifully, well balanced, light weight set up that I find perfect for trout fishing the rivers here in Tasmania.

What species are on your bucket list and why?

A New Zealand wild brown or rainbow trout because it's something that I've always wanted to catch. Doubt I'll ever get there to do it though, still one never knows do they...

What is a piece of fishing advice that you've been given that still sticks with you?

Never takes any risks when fishing as no fish is worth drowning for.

Three tips for somebody new to fishing?

  1. Most of all enjoy yourself when fishing.

  2. Listen and learn from an experienced fisher person, read fishing books, watch Tackle Tactics TV (You Tube) and join an Angling Club.

  3. Go with an experienced fisher person, as stated earlier, don't take risks and if you're unsure of the area you are about to fish, then don't fish there. Go to an area where others are fishing that feels safe, such as a jetty or pier.

Tournament Highlights

I've been the Ulverstone Angling Club Champion for most trout caught in rivers and streams over the past twelve years in a row. Back in 2009 I was the Team Captain for the Ulverstone Angling Club in the Carnival of the Grasshopper 'World Championships', which we won. I caught the most trout, the heaviest trout and was named 'Lord of the River'. One was only allowed to use a grasshopper trout fly or live grasshoppers. No lures were allowed to be used. I chose to fish with live grasshoppers.
