Oliver: "It was a sunny afternoon at Moreton Island with my family when I asked dad to go fishing on the high tide. We drove along the beach until we found a deep beach gutter. After pulling in an abundance of whiting and dart I was extremely happy and decided to have my last cast.
I cast out with a pipi that had been collected earlier, and within two minutes something big had taken my bait. I knew I was in for it when it started jumping and pulling drag. After a gruellingly long fight I managed to pull the beast up the beach, it was a 65cm tailor, the biggest I had ever caught.
I was super stoked on this catch and took it home for the fam.
But more recently I have been fishing a local waterway with live bait from my cast net for mangrove jacks, with my biggest going 37cm. I was extremely happy to get this fish on light gear. One of my favourite fish to catch would definitely have to be flathead, I mostly fish for these on shallow sandbars or close to the mangroves, usually I use a Z-Man 2.5 inch and do 3 hops u,p then leave it there for 2 seconds and within a couple of casts a flathead becomes victim to my skill. There's nothing better than the head shakes on these fellas".
Amanda: "I am known as fishing nanna on my socials, representing the older demographic of ladies out on the water having a crack. My favourite species to target locally out in Bass Strait is the Southern Bluefin tuna. I love the thrill of the chase, trolling a spread of divers and skirts and a spreader bar. Some tunes pumping in the boat as we do the miles to get the smiles. I love looking for the birds working and the adrenaline when you find them. I play spotter, scanning the sky for signs of action.
My partner and I love tuna to eat. As well as sashimi and tuna steaks when fresh, we put most of the fish in our smoker, preserving it and cryo-vaccing it. The biggest tuna I have caught was around 30 kilo, so I'm chasing a bigger model this season. We caught 11 last season. This year I would also like to drift into an active patch of tuna and try catching them on surface poppers. That would be a thrill. They are such a powerful fish and go hard and give good bang for your buck. I love it when they freight train off and make the line peel off and sing the song we all like to hear, ZZZZZZZZZZZ!".
Joshua: "One of my favourite destinations to fish would be Talbingo Dam in the snowy scheme. Over the years I have specifically targeted the trophy trout that reside there, and have been fortunate enough to land some quality fish. There has been plenty of refinement of techniques and a lot of experimentation through out this time.
My solo trips don't happen as much these days as I have a young family, but the enjoyment levels are certainly greater because I get to take the family with me. Generally teaching my kids is drifting unweighted worms on circle hooks, but this day my daughter was watching me bounce a soft plastic and asked if she could do it, so I handed her the rod and with a little hands on instruction, she was lifting and winding until a rainbow trout took the plastic. I hadn't taught her to strike, so she missed that fish.
With that in mind I changed to a small hardbody, which I cast out for her, and said to do the same retrieve, the look of shock when the line stopped and the rod buckled over was priceless. After some acrobatics, and some tense moments landing the trout, she had her fish, the smile and the excitement. Taking kids fishing is so much more enjoyable than I could have imagined, spending time outdoors with family".
Each one of these anglers gets to choose a $1000 Platypus Fishing Pack that contains rods and reels, line, lures, jigheads, soft plastics and heaps of awesome accessories.
