The Bug Gets Trout Number 100

By Adrian (meppstas) Webb

Today's weather conditions were nice and mild. With it being overcast, I decided it was time to head over to a favourite stretch of tannin water, that usually fishes well at this time of the season. Not having any rain for several days, I felt it was well worth spending a couple of hours in the Minnow River today. Even though it was still a little higher than I preferred, it looked good enough for me. With rain forecast later in the day, and being a mid-morning start, I was in a hurry to reach my entry point. The normal twenty-minute stroll to the river was turned into a fast fifteen-minute walk.

It was 10:20am by the time I hit the water and not all that long before a trout had a go at the #0 Mepps Aglia Fluo Micropigments Brown spinner, however it missed taking the trebles. A few more casts were had with the Aglia Brown and all I could manage was a couple of follows from the trout. It was time to make a change of lure. I remembered that this time of the season, with the caddis moths being out and about, the White Miller colour usually does well on the trout and that's what replaced the Aglia Brown.

It was a good move too. The first cast and retrieve, in a nice medium flowing stretch of tannin water, resulted in an instant hook up and the first trout was landed. From there on I continued to hook a few trout but lost every one of them. So, I downsized the White Miller from the #0 to a #00 (1.5 gram) model. That turned out to be a good move also as I went on to catch two trout in quick time.

The second of the two fish was a nice well-conditioned brown, and even better, it was also my 100th trout of the season. I did have a major problem though. My camera battery light was flashing. It was running low, and I knew that it may not last the time I would be in the river. I forgot to put my fully charged spare battery into the pocket of my fishing waders. So, from here on, for each fish caught, the video had to be short, as did each photo when a trout was caught. So, that's what I did.

From 10:20am through to 11:25am I caught and released ten trout, which were a mix of small to medium size fish. With the camera light flashing every time that I turned it on, I didn't bother filming the eleventh trout because it was only a small fish. I managed to film trout number twelve and just as I had the trout on the riverbank, the camera shut down. So did the trout.

From there on the fishing was tough. The trout were hitting the lure but not as aggressively as they were early on. The wind had also picked up from the east, which was more likely the reason for the change with the trout. I did go on to catch and release two more small browns, that were taken on the Mepps Aglia Fluo Micropigments spinner. It was a long time between the twelfth and the fourteenth trout too. In fact, it was forty-five minutes later.

By then I'd had enough. It was time to head back to the car, replace the camera battery and video the rundown of the spin session. With fourteen trout caught and released, it was pretty good, yes. It could have been much better though had I not hooked and lost several others... but it wasn't to be. The good thing was seeing a few caddis moths around, which twigged my memory of how well the White Miller has done on the trout at this time of the season.
