Help Out - Inland Fish Rescue

You can help save fish right now.

As the drought continues to ravage Australia's inland waterways, one group is taking practical action and rescuing large numbers of fish as the rivers and creeks dry up. OzFish is running programs, with the help of volunteers, to move Murray cod, golden perch and other fish species that are stranded in waterholes to hatcheries and larger, more stable waterways.

This epic program has rescued hundreds of fish that were otherwise destined to suffer a horrible fate as the last of the water disappears.

With the assistance of NSW DPI Fisheries staff and 15 dedicated volunteers, over 1000 work hours were performed and over 12,000km of travel was undertaken to catch, care for and transport the fish to safer waters. Among the hundreds of fish saved, 25 Murray cod ranging from 70 to 106cm were chosen as brood stock, along with 60 golden perch, and these fish will now contribute to fish stocking programs into the future.

There are now plans underway to expand the program further throughout inland areas, with the aim of preserving as many fish as possible, before the water completely disappears from our inland rivers, dams and creeks. This will again require a huge effort from a dedicated group of volunteers, all of whom give up hours upon hours of their own time for the chance to make a direct difference.

It's catching these iconic species that drives plenty of our fishing adventures, so at Tackle Tactics we're asking our fellow anglers to have a look at what these groups and amazing volunteers are doing, and if possible make a small donation to OzFish to help out and show support for the work they are doing. Not only are they on the frontline right now, rescuing fish, they will be the first ones on the ground to begin the re-stocking process, once the drought breaks and our waterways recover. We're sure all anglers, regardless of where they fish, would agree that it's a great cause and one that will have a positive impact in the face of extreme adversity... and that's something we can all get behind.

Another way that you can help out is to share this info around with your fellow anglers and wider circle on social media. The more people everywhere that are aware of the current situation, the more we can encourage them to help out. Recent media coverage of the large fish kills, that have affected western NSW this year, struck a chord with the whole country, as it was a shocking scene that really drove home just how bad the situation is for many of our fellow Australians and the environment that we all enjoy. We as anglers can do our bit to raise awareness amongst those that we know and hopefully assist OzFish and other groups to continue the great work that they do.

You can make a donation to OzFish here, and read more about their efforts here on their website. We'll be reaching out to the fishing community through our social media and encourage everyone to do the same, and make a small donation if possible. Let's fire up the #ozfishrescue movement and help preserve this amazing sport that we all enjoy.
