Tough Day at the Office

By Adrian (meppstas) Webb

Gale force winds were forecast and on their way, when I shot over to the tannin waters today and I knew I'd be in for a tough spin session. I wasn't going fishing today because I was very sore in the lower back and had hip pain to go with it... but I really needed a fix, so fishing it was.

The wind started to pick up as I arrived at the stream, around 11:00am and it wasn't all that bad to start with. I was fishing a stretch of water that didn't fish all that well last time, when it only gave up five browns. However I felt the trout may have started moving into the area by now... well that's what I was hoping for any way.

Like the last trip it started off a little slow, with no signs of a trout until I came to a nice sheltered run of water, where a small brown had a crack at the Mepps Aglia Fluo spinner. It was a pretty aggressive hit and that's as far as it went. It didn't take the spinner full on.

The wind had now picked up more than when I had started and was gusting in the 25-30kph range, which made it near impossible to cast the spinner with any accuracy at times. At one stage, when fishing a narrow open stretch of water, I had to cast the spinner two metres to the right of me and let the wind carry it to where I needed it to lob in the water.

I was seriously thinking about calling it a day when I picked up a nice well-conditioned, 420 gram brown from another narrow stretch of water. Catching that fish gave me a reason to push on and keep fishing, despite how strong the wind was gusting.

I knew there was still some very good stretches of water ahead of me, another reason to stick to it. Well, it wasn't what I had expected because after fishing on for another hour and a half all I managed was one hook up from a small brown and that was it.

Even the last stretch of water fished poorly and it's one that normally gave up a trout too. So my day was over. One trout caught and released, in just over two hours, was much worse than I had expected. I should have stayed home. I'm now paying the price having a layup with the back and hips. A trip to the doctor for another course of injections is in order...
