Trout Fishing at its Best

By Adrian (meppstas) Webb

Like I stated I would, at the end of yesterday's spin session, today I headed back to the same stream and commenced fishing from where I had finished the spin session yesterday. This time I was in the water by 8:40am and the weather conditions were much the same as yesterday, mild to warm and mainly overcast. Perfect for trout fishing. I started the session off with the same set up I used yesterday in this stream.

After having a few follows, from a couple of non-aggressive trout, I gave the White Miller coloured Bug a short workout and had just the softest of hits on it, which wasn't good enough for me. It was time for another lure change and this time it was the Stone Fly coloured Mepps Bug spinner that went on. If nothing happened in the first five minutes, I would make another change of lure. It didn't take all that long (5 minutes in fact) before I picked up my first trout of the morning on the March Brown Bug spinner and it was a nice medium size, well-conditioned trout, that made it into the net.

With patches of sunlight hitting the water, I felt that the Stone Fly colour may do well in these conditions, especially given that the water was a nice, light tannin colour. I thought the trout may take a real liking to it. Three minutes after the release of that trout and I was onto another medium size fish, that also made it into the net.

From here on I was having regular hits from the trout and catching more than I was missing. Those that were making it into the net were all nice solid fish, with just the odd small one amongst them. The larger fish were all over the 400g mark, with a couple over the 500g size, which was good. I did have a few lull moments, in between catching trout, before the fishing picked up again. The good thing was that I had no need to make a change of lure, the Stone Fly coloured Mepps Bug was doing a great job on the trout. Every hit from the trout was full of aggression, which was even better.

What was good about this stretch of water that I was fishing was the lack of large log jams on it. This made the fishing a lot easier for me. As the time went on and I fished my way upstream, I still continued to catch some decent size trout, the best of them weighing in at 620g. This was also the last fish caught.

I did hook and lose the odd one from time to time, however the catch rate was much higher than the loss rate. I was stoked with how the day went. It was close to 1:00pm when I caught the twenty eighth trout of the spin session and, once I released it, I decided it was time to call it a day. As much as I would have liked to fish on, to see if I could reach thirty trout for the day, my body was telling me different. I was sore in the lower back, and it was time to call it quits and head back to the car. That's what I did.

Twenty-eight trout caught and released was the best catch that I've had all season anyway, so I was quite happy to end the day with that. The little #00 Mepps Stone Fly coloured Bug did a brilliant job on the trout, right from the time that it replaced the White Miller colour at 8:45am. All going well with the lower back, I can head off for another spin session tomorrow, which I will more than likely do.
