Okuma Epixor XT Spinning Reels

By Jacob Iedema

After putting the Okuma Epixor XT spinning reels through their paces landbased and kayak fishing for trevally, queenfish, bream, flathead, snapper and more, as well as a northern adventure targeting barramundi, Jacob Iedema gives us his thoughts on this award winning and well-priced spinning reel.

The Epixor XT range of spinning reels are a standout product from Okuma, prioritising performance at an affordable price. Okuma as a brand are renowned for this attribute, providing exquisite quality to anglers at a lower price than many equivalent products from other brands. The Epixor XT is an absolute workhorse and personally it has never fallen short of my expectations.

If you're searching for a good looking reel it can be hard to go past an Epixor XT. From the slick two tone anodised spool to the sleek colour arrangements, it really is a stunning reel to look at. I also absolutely love the drag knob with its carbon fibre underlay and fine adjustable drag settings. So it looks good for starters.

However, this reel boasts more than just aesthetics, it's a rock solid reel that feels incredible to use. For a start the heavy duty aluminium bail arm never gets stuck half open and doesn't flick over when executing a cast. With seven ball bearings and one anti-reverse bearing, the Epixor XT offers a smooth and light feel when turning the handle, while the rigid metal handle gives the reel strength and durability above its competitors at this price point.

The Epixor XT utilises features that have filtered down from the higher end reels, such as the Helios SX, including the Cyclonic Flow Rotor, Torsion Control Armor and slow oscillation. These features are not gimmicks and I have found these three especially effective for improving the performance of the reel and prolonging the life of the reel.

The Cyclonic Flow Rotor is a unique design from Okuma that drives air around the outside of the reel and up under the spool to dry any water that might have been splashed onto the reel. By drying any moisture quickly this minimises rust and corrosion from damaging your reel.

Torsion Control Armor is another unique design feature from Okuma and it is designed to reduce twist in the body of the reel when under strain. It wraps around the body of the reel, securing and stabilising the gearing inside and prolonging the life of the reel. In the process TCA also creates a sturdy and powerful feeling reel.

Finally, slow oscillation is a property machined to improve line lay and line control. The slow oscillating spool allows braid to lay perfectly parallel, decreasing the risk of wind knots, while increasing line capacity and casting distance. This makes the reel ideal for lure fishing and it is a quality and affordable option for anglers who are just getting into the sport, while being capable enough for the tournament anglers out there.

The Epixor XT range of reels are a personal favourite of mine and they have done battle with some incredible fish. From bream to barramundi I've put a selection of these reels to the test and they haven't missed a beat since the day I spooled them.

If you're looking to get into lure fishing or add another reel to your kit, check out the Okuma Epixor XT at www.okuma.com.au. You won't be disappointed.
