San Diego Jam Knot

A strong and reasonably easy to tie knot for joining monofilament or fluorocarbon line to hooks, swivels or other terminal tackle. It is also known as the Reverse Clinch and the Heiliger knot, and retains excellent line strength.

  1. Pass the line through the eye of the hook, swivel or other terminal tackle. Leave a reasonable length of tag end to work with.

  2. Pass the tag end back under the main line to create a basic loop.

  3. Begin wrapping the tag end around the loop by passing it back over the front of the loop.

  4. This slide shows one complete wrap of the loop.

  5. Continue wrapping the tag end around the loop back towards the hook, swivel or terminal tackle.

  6. Ensure the first wrap stays open as you go. For lighter lines such as 10lb or less, use 7-8 wraps. The number of wraps can be decreased as the breaking strain of the line increases, down to a minimum of 4 wraps for 40lb and above.

  7. After the final wrap, pass the tag end through the remaining loop from the back to the front.

  8. Now pass the tag end back through the small loop created by the first wrap.

  9. Moisten the knot, and then tension with plenty of pressure by alternately pulling the main line and tag end.

  10. Trim the tag end neatly, and your San Diego Jam knot is ready to fish.
