5 Tips - Stalking Jungle Perch

By Jeff Wilton

Blend In

JPs (jungle perch) have amazing eyesight and anything out of the ordinary will stand out. Picking clothing that blends into your surroundings will help you to not stand out. If possible always walk streams against the current as most fish will face into the flow of water and this means that lures are coming into the fish naturally.

Slow and Steady

When approaching a pool or stretch of water that you plan on fishing, take a moment to plan how you will approach it to fish it most effectively. Keep your movements slow, before making a cast, so that you don't spook fish. Stay low and stalk the pool.

Gear Prep / Safety

Good preparation goes a long way as you can't take much stuff with you on most walks. A comfortable backpack containing water, food, tackle and a small first aid kit, is about my gear list. Also make sure that you fish with a mate and let someone know where you are going and what time you will return. In reality about 90% of JP (jungle perch) streams won't offer phone service, so if an accident occurs getting help is difficult.

Lure Selection

JP (jungle perch) will attack pretty much anything that moves in their pool, so choosing a style or colour isn't overly important. Using light braid and light leader is, as it will have less chance of spooking fish.

Choosing the right offering for the pool or stretch of stream in front of you can make a big difference. Deep pools may need a weighted jighead, snaggy sections may require a weedless hook and shallow runs may be best fished with a surface lure. Taking the time to change rigs, to suit the changing situations in front of you, will mean more chances at fish.

Don't Destroy What You Enjoy

JP streams and the country that they live in is normally some of the best that you will ever see. Make sure that all rubbish is taken back out with you. Don't rip up tracks by car and if having fires, etc., then be safe and responsible. Plenty of streams are part of parks and peoples' properties, so respect their rules. As for the fish themselves... they are gems, so get a photo and release them quickly.
