As a kid I was advised by a wise man, my dad, that fish love eating cheese. So, I thought why not give it ago. What do I have to lose?
Well I did lose something. That was my pocket money for a day after mum found out that I took all the Kraft Cheddar cheese out of the fridge and used it for bait to catch bream, mullet, flathead, garfish and tarwhine down on the local river.
Since those early days I haven't been game to pinch my wife's cheese, so I go and get my own when chasing carp, freshwater mullet, trout and a number of other freshwater fish species.
The rigging of the cheese is very simple. Cut it into a 1cm cube and thread it onto a hook, making sure that you leave the hook point and barb outside of the cube. If I'm chasing larger freshwater fish species and I have to use a larger hook, I will put 1, 2 or 3 cubes onto the hook.
