Surgeon's Knot
The Surgeon's Knot is an adaptation of a square (reef) knot that is used for surgical applications with sutures and adapted further here as an effective fishing knot for joining two lines of similar diameter, including braid, monofilament or fluorocarbon.
1. Start by cutting your leader (yellow) to the desired finished length and lay it alongside the main line (pink), creating enough overlap to tie the knot.
2. Create a loop with both lines.
3. Start wrapping the tag end of the mainline and the long end of the leader through and around the loop, creating an overhand knot with both lines.
4. For mono to mono/fluorocarbon connections, pass the mainline tag and long end of the leader back through the loop 3-4 times. For a braid to mono/fluorocarbon connection use at least 6-8 wraps back through the loop.
5. With tension on all lines, slowly work the knot down, keeping the wraps neat and lubricating the knot prior to bedding it down fully.
6. Trim the tag ends of the mainline and leader, and your Surgeon's Knot is complete.
