Figure Eight Loop

The Figure Eight Loop is a simple, easy to tie loop knot that is ideal for creating rigs where changing sinker weights quickly is required. Rather than cutting and tying, different weight sinkers can be looped off and on quickly and easily to suit the depth or current. They can also be removed during travel to minimise the risk of a heavy sinker banging into rods, reels, boat and other gear.

Anglers around the globe also use this loop knot for looping on terminal tackle, berleying devices and for looping two lines together, such as a mainline and leader.

  1. Create a basic looped double in the line.

  2. Pass the head of the loop back under the double.

  3. Wrap the head of the loop over the double.

  4. Bring the head of the original loop back under the double to fully wrap it once.

  5. Pass the head of the original loop through the eye of the newly created larger loop in the double.

  6. Moisten the line and tighten firmly, ensuring your final loop is the desired size. Trim the tag end neatly.

  7. You can now attached snapper leads or any other object with an opening by passing the loop through the eyelet, and over the end.

  8. Pull the loop closed on the object to secure. This makes changing sinkers quick and easy.
